Conversion and Maintenance of ebikes
In the same way that shorter gears help you overcome hills, they also allow the engine to run more freely, helping a lot with autonomy. A ratio of at least 1:1 is a good advantage. The regular chainring that comes with the Bafang kit has 44 teeth, which means a rear ratio with the largest cog of at least 44 teeth will be an advantage, although the basic 34-tooth cog will also do the trick. This is not an emergency, but it is something that in the future you will want to be able to count on with a more versatile relationship. We have engines that work with more torque at low rpm and are very suitable for bikes with more basic gears.
See this article on our forum, it explains much more about this issue.
The first and most important difference is that the hub motor acts after the bike's gearshift while the Central motor acts before the gearshift. This makes a huge difference because the engine uses the bike's gears the same way you do when pedaling. The result is that with a lot less power (and a lot more battery savings) you get a lot of power to climb hills and speed to pedal free on the straights. Unlike the hub motor, the central one has gears that match the cadence of the cyclist's legs with that of the electric motor, this allows for an energy efficiency of 80 to 95% while in the hub motor, this energy use does not exceed 50%, which it makes him very hot. The hub motor is very heavy and has a terrible effect on the bike, especially on bumpy roads and trails, as the mid-engine is in the frame so you don't even realize it's there. The mid-motor is more expensive because unlike the hub motor, it has a set of internal gears delivering the exact same cadence you use for pedaling. The pedal experience is unchanged.
With regard to "Big Brands".. I will tell you that we have advantages, because in addition to greater power, Bafang central engines have technical assistance and warranty, ease of "transplantation" to almost any other bike, and especially the great advantage lies in the fact that the battery is not electronically linked to the engine management, that is, it can be replaced and exchanged easily. In practice... all Shimanos and Bosch are in awe of the brave Bafang engines.. ah.. yes... not to mention the cost, which is much lower.
iPedal offers a version called TS 500W Power (REMAP), which is basically a software and hardware upgrade that is done in the 250W version. The motor goes from 36 to 48V, the torque curve is remapped allowing for high cadence and the motor gets some hardware implementations to control the temperature. The result is a motor that reaches 500W very smoothly, it is a very interesting option, although it does not have a throttle lever (the throttle port is used by the temperature sensor).

The kits come with a mechanical brake sensor, they work like this: when you pull the brake lever, the engine stops immediately. This can be good for those who are going to stop at a traffic light and insist on continuing pedaling, without the sensor, the engine is fighting with the brake.
In case your bike has hydraulic brakes, what comes in the kit doesn't work, but you can buy the special sensor. Some people don't think it's necessary, others think it's very important, it's up to you to decide. We suggest using a sensor on one of the brakes.
The difference between the Bafang and TS engines is that the latter has a torque sensor, which gives a smoother pedaling feeling. The Bafang is a more robust engine and has up to 9 power levels, so even without the torque sensor, it is very easy to find a power level that allows you to exercise and conquer all the slopes of the way.
